Machakos Co-operative Union
Machakos Co-operative Union (MCU) is located in Machakos town,
65 kilometers south-east of Nairobi. MCU was established in 1964 and registered under
the Co-operative Societies Act in 1972 as an umbrella organization for primary organisations
in Machakos county.
MCU is a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation.
Its main objective was to market coffee for the producers. It has since expanded to
incorporate other forms of farmers’ organizations in the union membership including women’s groups.
PCAT’s annual grant was increased from £5,000 to £7,500 in 2019. This funding has been focused on supporting
women’s self-help groups with a variety of schemes. The self-help groups enable women to work collectively together
on projects which will improve livelihoods and well-being. This includes goat-keeping, handicrafts (primarily the weaving
of sisal baskets called kiondos) and savings and credit unions. The area of operation of MCU covers the county of Machakos.
